The press have been whipping up a fervour about splits and schisms, which is not exactly without precedent in the history of the church over the last 2000 years.  However, what has hugely impressed me from the Bishops themselves, is the sense of humility and Christ-likeness in the desire to understand other people and their perspectives, even when there is profound disagreement. 

For example, this post from Bishop Alan is fantastic.  In it, the Bish quotes an evangelical American Bishop reflecting on the appointment of Gene Robinson, the first openly practicing gay Bishop. He is very clear about his disagreements, but also recognises Christ in those that he disagrees with so strongly.  Brilliant.

In a very small way, I think that we are trying to do in our small community.  We are trying to allow people to have their own opinions and views, and not have a party line, but to gather primarily around Christ and the common mission we have.  It leads to all kinds of mess and, on days, tensions.  But it is what Christ calls us to … to love one another even when we disagree.
