This is so ridiculous that it made me laugh! I did think about taking a photo of me, making it look like a jigsaw, adding Pippa and seeing what it looked like … but then I wondered what would happen if SHE ever saw it. Not a pretty thought.

Hyles bases this phrase on a translation of the word “helper” in Gen 2:18. But it really does seem a mistranslation (as well as being utterly demeaning, ridiculous and lots of other words). The Hebrew word is ‘ezer, and is a word that is used of God in various places in the Bible, including Exod 18:4 and Psalm 115:9.
Lets just think about this for a minute (or maybe a few years!). I’m still trying to get head round it (it seems as though a women’s role to a man is being compared to God’s role to the nation of Israel!), but I am absolutely sure it does NOT mean that women are there just to make man complete. Or as Jack Hyles says:
“God made woman to sit on the sidelines and cheer when a man succeeds.”
Arrrrhhhh!!!
That’s outrageous!!
Indeed Andrew.
It is so puzzling how anyone can possibly believe that stuff (ha ha)!
lol, the missing piece, love it!
personally if it worked for him that’s great, i hope he got a big cheer from his missus for the book
By the looks of it its not a recent work and i think we have a more critiqued view of men/women then sometime back in the 50s [18 or 19 you can choose]…
Yeah I saw this one on Bog Blog as well. Seems like this guy’s church was practically a cult. I guess we are lucky to have avoided this type of religion in the UK…
I guess one thing we can learn from this is how easy it is to read in one’s own culture (in this instance - Southern macho cowboy culture?) into one’s reading of the bible.
Or maybe the guy was just a complete muppet!
Thanks Paul … you are right, not a recent book, but seems as though it was published in 1981, which isn’t that long ago … well OK, maybe quite a while in church terms!
Thanks for the comment Alastair … I think you make a good point about our culture influencing how we read the Bible, but i wonder if he isn’t just a muppet!
sometimes i wish i was a muppet
Life might be a bit less complicated!!!!
Very sorry, I accidently flagged the women page as being objectionable; I wanted to flag it as my favourite page! I am exploring christianity and have long been put off by the apparant sexism in the bible. Your site has given me the impetus to keep on searching - Thank you.
Thanks anon. Hope your search is fruitful.
